Brest authorities ban picket against reelection of Lukashenka for new presidential term

As reported by the picket organizer, Chair of the Brest city organization of the Belarusian Leftist Party "Fair World" Liudmila Dzenisenka, the official reason for the ban is that a picket of supporters of the presidential candidate Tatsiana Karatkevich will take place in Savieckaja Street.

“Fair World” intended to hold their picket on October 10 with the aim to discuss the pre-election program of Aliaksandr Lukashenka and campaign against his reelection for another presidential term. According to Liudmila Dzenisenka, “he didn't keep his electoral promises, that's why we wanted to call the electorate not to vote for him”.

Since Savieckaja Street in Brest was listed as a suitable place for electoral events, members of “Fair World” chose it as a place for their picket. However, as it follows from the answer of the executive committee the event could not be held in that street, as far as members of the electoral headquarters of Tatsiana Karatkevich were holding their events there. However, members of the electoral headquarters were holding electoral pickets only in a small part of the street.

“The city executive committee refers to Art. 9 of the Law “On Mass Events” and say that it is prohibited to hold several mass events in one location at once. However, the law doesn't have such provisions, and it is just a formal reference aimed at justifying the prohibition of our event,” believes Liudmila Dzenisenka.
