OSCE observers visit Smarhoń

Tereza Ambrazhova and Sergey Ermakov, long-term observers of the OSCE mission in Belarus, have visited the town of Smarhoń, Hrodna region. They visited the district election commission and met with local human rights activist and long-term observer Ales Dzerhachou.

According to Ales Dzerhachou, the observers cared a lot about the openness and transparency of the electoral process and therefore asked many questions about the practical application of the electoral law which may arise from the experience of previous elections.

The OSCE observers asked if they could be allowed to directly observe the counting of votes on voting day, so that they could see the contents of each ballot. According to them, the mission is currently negotiating permission to obtain the guarantees of such observation rights.
