Baranavičy: human rights activist files appeal against early campaigning for the incumbent

September 5, human rights activist Siarhei Housha filed an appeal to the Central Election Commission regarding the campaigning in support of Aliaksandr Lukashenka before the official registration of candidates for presidency.

His appeal concerns the publication of information about the beginning of the socio-cultural action “We Are Together” (launched by the Belarusian TV), in the newspaper of Baranavičy City Executive Committee “Naš Kraj”, in its issue No. 65 for September 2, 2015.

In this article, titled “The Belarus Chosen by Us”, the state-owned newspaper informs about a performance of popular Belarusian artists in Baranavičy.

Siarhei Housha draws the attention of the Central Election Commission to the fact that while welcoming the artists and the audience the Deputy Chair of Baranavičy City Executive Committee Mikalai Tokar, called the present policy of Aliaksandr Lukashenka “socio-economical creativity” and emphasized that the country was awaiting the most important socio-political event, the presidential elections. In his speech the official expressed the confidence that citizens of the Brest region would give their votes for the preservation of the main values: peace, stability and independence. Human rights activist Siarhei Housha believes that this is a blatant campaigning for the incumbent, which was started ahead of time, and asks the Central Election Commission to take action against violators of the law.
