No opposition representatives in Mahilioŭ regional election commission
The joint meeting of the Presidium of the Mahilioŭ Regional Council and the Regional Executive Committee was attended by local human rights activist Barys Bukhel.
The 13 seats in the commission were contested by 32 people, among whom were two representatives of the opposition. Natallia Shkadun was nominated by collecting signatures, but indicated that she was a member of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Hramada). Anatol Zauyalau was delegated from the Belarusian Party of the Left "Fair World".
However, only loyal individuals became members of the commission.
Human rights activist Barys Bukhel comments about the process of formation of the Mahilioŭ Regional Election Commission:
“Officials put certain requirements for candidates, which included complete information about the candidate, experience of work in election commissions and the level of professional qualities, as well as the party’s representation in the region and their popularity among the population. This is supposedly because the opposition did not meet these criteria, and the pro-democratic candidates were not included in the commission.”
