Central Election Commission to consider bids from 7 presidential candidates tomorrow

The Central Election Commission is expected to consider at a meeting tomorrow afternoon applications of seven persons who announced their intention to run for the President, as well as the issue of registration of voters’ initiative groups.

As of today, the CEC has registered applications from seven potential candidates: the incumbent Aliaksandr Lukashenka, Siarhei Haidukevich, Siarhei Kaliakin, Andrei Kanavets, Tatsiana Karatkevich, and Anatol Liabedzka.

In addition, the CEC received today an application from political prisoner Mikalai Statkevich. The documents were submitted by his wife Maryna Adamovich, who headed his initiative group.

However, earlier the CEC Secretary Mikalai Lazavik told BelaPAN that there were no chances that Mikalai Statkevich’s initiative group could be registered.

“In fact, the application is a petition from citizens. We have to accept the application, examine it, consider it and respond formally on the merits,” said Mr. Lazavik. “Therefore, the application for the registration of Statkevich’s initiative group will be accepted, as well as from the rest of the people who applied or will apply to the CEC.”

“But not a single person who is guided by the norms of the law has any doubt that the registration of Statkevich’s initiative group will be rejected,” said the CEC Secretary. “Even those who are guided by some political considerations are aware that registration will be denied.”
